As with most harmful chemicals it is because of the nature of the atoms in the mixture that you will die if you drink enough of it.   Bleach contains Chlorine which is an element that is always looking for electrons so to speak.

When you drink it, the atoms of the Chlorine will attract the electrons in your body, thus stripping them from you, this is called oxidation.  With no electrons to keep your organs finely tuned they will break down and if given enough of the chemical and time they will dissolve.

By the way if I got this one wrong in any way I think you should give me a break, science may be cool but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to understand.

Check our science area for more on electrons and how they work.
