The Freemason’s are a secret society, less secret than they once were.  Today they are the ground floor of many conspiracy theories.  There certainly are some secrets within the Freemasonry, but what exactly they are could be anything from nothing important to secrets that could bring the downfall of humanity, or so rumoured.  Most information regarding the Freemasonry is disputable at best so this answer should be considered the same.

The Freemason’s are members of a fraternal organization, a brotherhood.  Members share both moral and metaphysical ideals, they often share beliefs in a Supreme Being as well.  There are divisions around the world with ties to all sorts of things, probably most things.  While some may feel the society is evil in nature, that is probably not true, it is more likely that they simply act to benefit themselves above all others, and that’s how most if not all of the world works so it can hardly be considered evil.

There are only theories of the origin of this organization.  Some of these theories are that they are: an outgrowth of the medieval guilds of stonemasons, direct descendants of the “Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem (The Knights Templar), an administrative arm of the Priory of Sion, descendants of Noah or Enoch, and many others, most theories are significantly embedded in true historical contexts.

One theory dates back to the 10th century.  King Athelstan of England is said to have issued the first Charter to the Masonic Lodges.  Even this however would not be the true origin, perhaps early in the Freemasonry’s existence, but its true origins must be deeper than that.  How it has managed to survive and not be completely exposed to the public is quite a mystery, especially considering its famous alleged members such as Ben Franklin and Joseph Smith.

Check these links out for more information, but be careful what you choose to believe.  Not that there’s any risk, other than you’ll probably be wrong whatever you choose to believe.
