There is no one answer to this; it all depends on what features you are looking for with your purchase.  If games alone are your only concern, then chances are you will be better off with Microsoft’s Xbox 360.  This is because Microsoft’s system has the advantage over Sony’s Playstation 3 in terms of games available.  Aside from a few key exclusive games on the Playstation 3, the Xbox 360 has several exclusive games that Sony’s platform will never have.  Also, in terms of graphics, the 360 has now been winning in side-by-side comparisons with the PS3, especially since video game developers have had a longer time to master Microsoft’s technology than they have had with Sony’s console.

However, if there is more to consider for your purchase than simply games, such as movie capabilities, than the Playstation 3 may be the wiser buy, since it has a built-in Blu-Ray player for Blu-Ray Disc Movies, which the 360 does not have.  As far as market prices go for stand-alone Blu-Ray players, Sony’s price is unbeatable, especially considering the PS3′s other abilities (it does allow you to play games, too!).

Either way, you can’t really go wrong with either system.  If money is tight, though, and you are decidedly against purchasing Nintendo’s Wii console (or if you already own it, like the whole world seems to), then the 360 is a bit on the cheaper side compared to the PS3.  You can purchase the medium-grade model 360, called the Xbox 360 Pro Console, for about $300 now.  The PS3 at it’s cheapest will still run you about $400, and the higher end model will cost $100 more.

All in all, if games are your thing (and your only thing), the Xbox 360 is a sure bet that can’t be beat.  However, if you are planning on converting your most beloved DVDs to the Blu-Ray format and are able to spend a bit more money on a console, the Playstation 3 should more than satisfy you.
