What will happen in 2012?
For some reason the Mayans used a calendar system with a limited number of days. We use a system which allows for any number of places, 1, 10, 100, 100000000000000000, etc… . The Mayans had only five places, the first could be any number between 1-20, the second place between 1-17, the third between 1-19, the fourth between 1-19 and the fifth between 1-12. So the highest date you can have is 10.17.19.19.12, very odd I know.
So if there is a limited number of days then the calendar must end when each place gets to its highest number. Archaeologists have found Mayan dates in history in carved monuments and have been able to determine when day 1 was, August 11th 3114 BC. From that they determined the end date of the calendar to be December 21st 2012. Sound familiar? It should, it reminds me of Y2K. For Y2K computer systems were only designed to use two bits for the year. That was done to save space on computers when we have 4k machines (2 digits used to be a big deal). When the year 2000 rolled around all our computers would think it’s the year 1900 and of course that would lead to problems.
So did the Mayans not anticipate living past 2012? If so they were right, but not because the end of the world is coming on December 21 2012.
So what will happen on December 21 2012? Probably the same thing that happened on January 1st 2000. People are constantly predicting the end of the world, it’s in the Bible, there are countless movies and stories of the end of the world and beyond. We have a strange fascination with the end of the world (my favorite is a zombie apocalypse) and 2012 is just another fad. By 2013 we’ll have another potential end of the world coming but you can rest assured that none of these predictions are anything other than money making schemes or bad logic, or both.
