In order to become a citizen of Mexico, or to have dual-citizenship stats, you must have had a parent born in Mexico.  If you are American and your parents are not Mexican you can still move and work in Mexico, but you’ll need a work visa.  The rules between the two countries are not going to hinder you in anyway, as long as you follow the rules of course.  Some countries do not allow dual-citizenship, but the US and Mexico do allow it.

If one or both of your parents were born in Mexico you can get your dual-citizen status but there are a few other things you’ll need as well.

  • You must be 18 years old
  • You’ll have to fill out an application at the Mexican consult
  • You’ll need both your US birth certificate, and the Mexican birth certificate of your parent
  • You’ll need documentation saying you’re a US citizen
  • Official picture ID (such as a drivers license)
  • Two passport photos
  • Twelve US dollars, this price is subject to change at any time.

Traveling between the two countries should not be a problem as long as you have proof of your citizenship.

If you do not qualify to get Mexican citizenship you can still get the work visa.  You’ll need these things to get your visa.

  • A valid passport and one photocopy
  • A letter from your bank showing proof that you deposit one thousand dollars into your bank account per dependant or copies of bank records for the past six months showing the same thing.
  • Two passport photos
  • You’ll need to complete an application at the Mexican consult.
  • One hundred and thirty-two dollars, this price is also subject to change at any time.

This site should help with any other questions you may have.
