A ferric ion is an ion that is missing three electrons.  That means that the ion has a positive charge, since it’s missing three electrons it has a +3 positive charge and is ferric.  When iron rusts water is combining with the air to for a light acid, this acid will strip the iron of some of its electrons.  The rusting iron that has fewer electrons will contain ferric ions, as well as ferrous ions.  Ferrous ions are just like ferric ions except that they’ve only lost two electrons.  Rust is a household item, although not intentionally for most of us.

Another household item that may have ferric ions is a tobacco smoke filter, or other similar products.  In order to reduce the carcinogenic in the air these filters have ferric ions in them to attract the electrons in the smoke, reducing the harmful properties of it.
