In Brazil both men and women were engagement rings. They wear them on their right hands and after they are wed they move them to their left hands. The rings are made of gold and are used as the wedding bands after the wedding so no diamond ring is typically used.

You might be interested to note that in the eighteenth century a discovery of diamonds in Brazil, as well as other places, increased the availability of diamonds. This launched a surge in diamond jewelry sales, including diamond rings. The people of Brazil seemed to pay the diamond boom no mind and continued using gold bands only. It seems like the Brazilians knew what they were doing since the cost of an engagement ring these days is rather high.
