Bears have 74 short chromosomes. There nearest relatives are actually seals and walruses they are also closely related to dogs and raccoons. Raccons and bears share a common ancestor which they split from to form 2 different branches. Bear are usually traced back to the Parictis that had a skull only 7 cm (3 in) long. There are 8 living species of bear which are have different characteristics but are also very similiar.
