The question of whether God could create a rock that even he cannot lift has been asked in many different forms. Could God create a burrito so hot that even he cannot could not eat it, or could God create a triangle in which the three interior angles do not add up to 180 degrees? This question is called the Omnipotence Paradox.
There are a few schools of thought on answering this question. In some answers it can be shown that God is in fact not omnipotent and in some it shows that God is omnipotent. The answer people expect or assume to be correct would be that either yes God can create a rock in which he cannot lift (thus making him not omnipotent), or no he could not create a rock in which he cannot lift (thus making him not omnipotent).
The alternate theories are answered in such as way that God remains omnipotent.
1. God can create a rock in which he cannot lift, but then he is also able to provide the means to lift said rock.
2. God cannot, nor does he have to, do that which is logically impossible. God created the physical laws of our universe and to go against such laws is neither possible nor important. One could always argue that God could change the physics of the universe in order to accomplish such a task, but that would probably end life as we know it.
3. God can do the logically impossible, God creates a stone that He cannot lift, then proceeds to lift it.
The most common theory on why we believe this paradox exists is intertwined with the concept of faith. We simply do not have the capability of understanding why God can or cannot accomplish such as task. Since we do not understand it (or cannot understand it) we consider it to be a paradox.
