If there was no pain at the time and no discomfort afterwards it is likely that there is nothing seriously wrong.  Our bodies crack often at the joints.  Our hips are one of the largest joints in our bodies and it is not out of the ordinary for them to produce the crack sound you hear, especially during sex when the hips may twist and move in ways they don't often experience.

As long as the pain is not significant or long lasting there is nothing to worry about in regards to a joint crack, or a joint pop.  Joint cracking can be scary, especially the ones form the hip that can feel very odd, but you should not worry about seeing a doctor about it.

There are a few reasons why any joint may crack.

  • Gas bubbles slowly form around our joints.  When these gases build up, they can sometimes pop when they are released.
  • Tendons and ligaments cross over our joints.  They are pretty tight and can produce a cracking sound when they are pulled from one side of the joint to the other.
  • Although arthritis is not a result of someone cracking their joints it can cause more joint cracking.  The knuckles are the most common place for this.  The arthritis can cause damage to your joints and that can lead to the cracking of your joints.  This is a later symptom of arthritis however so don't take your joints cracking as a sign that you have arthritis.
