Yes. Condoms and birth control do overlap in their ability to prevent pregnancy. However, condoms have the unique advantage of being able to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.
In addition, there have been more than a few cases in which a woman has either forgotten to use birth control or has claimed to be using birth control when she actually wasn't. In these cases, you are protecting yourself from an unwanted pregnancy by using a condom.
Using a condom is considered being responsible - it's the best thing you can do both for yourself and for your partner.
Just one last point - all types of birth control have some failure rate (with the hormonal birth control being the most reliable), so doubling-up can significantly increase the amount of protection you and your partner have.
