IVM is a method used to achieve multiple ova during a single cycle without the use of artificial hormones.
In a normal cycle, many follicles begin to develop. At a certain point in the cycle, one follicle 'takes over' and the rest cease to develop. That follicle continues to grow until it is large enough (around 20-22mm) and then the ovum inside is released in a process known as ovulation.
IVM takes advantage of the multiple follicles that begin to develop. In a process performed in an operating room, usually with light general anesthesia, the immature ova are aspirated and then matured in a laboratory setting. IVM is 100% effective in eliminating the risk of OHSS - ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, and is therefore indicated in women with a high risk or history of OHSS. Once the ova are mature, they are fertilized using the same process as IVF.
IVM is gaining popularity worldwide and was recently approved in Israel (Feb 2008).
